Chapter Nineteen

A Beautiful Note

If we were going to make our own jerky, we were going to need a steady supply of our own meat. So, as our first official order of business, the Beef Jerky Gang decided we needed to figure out where the cafeteria was getting the meat it used for our mystery bits. Gary volunteered to sneak around and see what he could learn.

I was just settling into Mrs. Dorney’s class on Monday morning, wondering if Gary had learned anything yet, when someone punched me square in the middle of my back and then slammed something on my desk. A familiar scent caught my nose—an aroma of peach with a hint of evil—as the Pink Dragon walked past me toward her desk.

My heart raced.

A note. On my desk. From Jessica Hale. The internal alarm in my head sounded. I had been preparing for this moment for weeks.

Over the years, I had received my share of notes from Jessica, and they were never good. But the Book had a special section on how to deal with notes from girls. Everything from how to actually unfold one, to how to read their loopy handwriting, to how to decode all those smiley faces and hearts.

Oh, and one more thing. How to use a girl’s note against her.

I had started a few weeks ago, when I’d baited Jessica into writing me a nasty note. What she didn’t know was that I kept that note—to use as a handwriting guide. It took me several nights of slow, painstaking work, but I finally mastered Jessica’s ridiculous bubbly letters. I even learned how to make those obnoxious hearts that she put above her lowercase i’s. I learned how to write like the enemy. And for the last two weeks, I had been carrying my Jessica Hale Note Preparedness Kit in my backpack at all times, just waiting for my opportunity to arise.

And now it had.

As I picked up Jessica’s real note, I slipped my fake note out of my Jessica Hale Note Preparedness Kit at the same time. I unfolded both notes simultaneously.

Jessica’s real note had only three words. The three words every boy dreamed of hearing:

YOU WILL DIE

Simple and to the point. You had to admire that about her.

Making sure no one was looking, I quickly slipped the real note in my pocket and pretended to read the fake note instead.

Jessica turned around and gave me a hateful look. So, she was on to me. Time to do something she would never expect.

I smiled at her and waved. “Thanks so much, Jessica!” I said it loud and proud.

My disruption caught Mrs. Dorney’s attention immediately. She was a stickler about notes, and she shook her head at me. “Peter Mills, you know that notes are not allowed in this school. Who passed it to you?”

I gave the most innocent look I could muster. “But Mrs. Dorney, it was only Jessica Hale. No harm there, right?”

Dorney looked down at Jessica.

“Did you pass Peter a note?”

Jessica said nothing.
